Where to Find an Emergency Dentist

Whether you live in Falls Church or are just visiting, you can receive emergency dental care at our office. Our team has just about seen it all and we understand how important it is to diagnose and treat dental problems quickly. We’ve had people come in because they had fallen and broken a tooth, been in a fight, suffered a sports injury, or cracked a tooth while eating nuts or hard candy.

When that happens, what do you do?

The first thing to do is call our office in Falls Church for an emergency dental appointment during regular business hours. We’ll do our best to schedule you for an appointment that same day. If it’s after-hours and you are experiencing a true dental emergency that cannot wait for treatment, we recommend you go to a 24-hour medical clinic or emergency room.

What Can Cause a Toothache or Mouth Pain?

The number one cause of tooth pain is dental decay. Dental decay is an infection that causes cavities. If the dental decay erodes the enamel covering the tooth and reaches the soft pulp inside, it can cause tooth sensitivity and pain.

Other causes of mouth and dental pain include:

  • Tooth Abscess: This is an infection in the root of the tooth with symptoms that may include a severe toothache or tooth sensitivity, fever, bad breath, swollen glands, swelling of the face and gums, and open or draining sores on or near your gums. It can be caused by tooth decay, trauma to the mouth, or gum disease. If left untreated, it can cause serious complications.
  • Crown came off or filling fell out: If you lose a crown or lose a filling, you may notice more tooth sensitivity and you’re more prone to additional damage or decay if left untreated. Please call Herrmann & Desio Family Dentistry immediately to schedule an appointment.
  • Cracked or broken teeth: If you crack or break a tooth, it’s important to see a dentist as soon as possible. Delaying treatment may result in an infection, which can lead to much bigger problems.
  • Tooth knocked loose: Call our emergency dentist if you have a tooth knocked loose or notice a permanent tooth that wriggles. We’ll do our best to save the loose tooth so you don’t end up with a hole in your mouth.
  • Tooth knocked out: Accidents, sports injuries, even falling can cause a tooth to be knocked out. If you lose a tooth, hold the tooth by the top white part, gently dip the tooth in milk or water, and try to return it to its place in the mouth, biting down on a moistened gauze or a tea bag to hold it in place until a dentist can see it. Be careful not to swallow the tooth! Don’t wipe the tooth on anything because that can damage the root or roots of the tooth. If you can’t hold the tooth back in its socket, rinse off the tooth and put it in a container of your saliva or milk to keep it moistened until you make it to our emergency dental office or emergency room.
  • Enamel worn thin by teeth grinding: Teeth grinding, which is also called bruxism, can make them more sensitive to touch and temperature. Teeth grinding can also cause headaches, instigate jaw or facial pain, damage the bone and gum tissue holding teeth in place, and result in loss of sleep.
  • Sinus pressure: Believe it or not, a sinus infection (sinusitis) can create pain in your teeth. If you think this a sinus infection or cold could be causing your pain, you might consider calling your personal care physician instead of the dentist.

When May a Tooth Extraction be Necessary?

There are several reasons why a tooth extraction may be necessary. It may be needed to relieve overcrowding. Or it may be needed because the tooth has been damaged beyond repair and can’t be saved by a root canal.

Here are some of the reasons why a tooth extraction may be necessary:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Severely broken tooth
  • Baby tooth does not fall out on its own
  • Crowding
  • Impacted wisdom tooth
  • Advanced periodontal disease

Tooth extraction is a routine dental procedure. Our dentist will ensure your comfort during the procedure and will take steps to confirm the bone around the tooth is not damaged. Our dentist can also perform a bone graft to preserve the bone volume if needed. This is important if you would like to fill the space left by the tooth extraction with a dental implant. Read More

When to Get Emergency Dental Treatment in Falls Church

Our team at Herrmann & Desio Family Dentistry realizes that it might be difficult to know when to seek emergency help for a particular dental problem. Some problems may seem less serious than others.
In general, we recommend seeking an emergency dentist if you have any of the following dental conditions or symptoms: Broken or fractured teeth, knocked-out teeth, severe toothache or pressure, sudden and severe tooth sensitivity, dental decay including cavities, abscessed tooth, lost or loose fillings, broken crowns or lost restorations, orthodontic pain or injuries, worn tooth enamel (from grinding), or sinus pressure.

How to Handle More Serious Dental Problems

Some dental emergencies may be so serious that it may be wiser to call 911, an oral surgeon or your primary care physician instead of your dentist. Those emergencies include severe swelling of your face and gums, severe bleeding from the teeth or mouth, or sudden injuries to your face, head, teeth or jaw.

How Much Do Dental Emergency Visits Cost?

There is no set amount because the cost may differ from one kind of emergency to another. The cost will depend on the type of treatment required for your individual symptoms or problem. Among the emergency dental care services we provide at Falls Church are extractions, root canal treatment, and replacement crowns and fillings.

We accept most major insurance plans and credit cards. If you don’t have a dental plan, we offer CareCredit® and the DentRite® discount plan. CareCredit is a healthcare credit card that offers financing options for health and dental expenses. DentRite is not insurance but is a discount dental plan that affordable alternative for individuals or families that provides considerable savings on dental procedures. Read More
