Floss makes gloss.
You may already know that routine brushing after meals and regular cleanings by a professional dental hygienist will keep your smile glowing. You may, however, neglect the third essential ingredient for a healthier mouth. Regular flossing is one of the best ways to protect your teeth and ensure a lifetime of beautiful smiles. Flossing daily prevents plaque from building up between teeth. If left alone, the plaque will harden and turn into tartar, which requires professional removal. By flossing regularly at home, you’ll avoid unnecessary time in the dentist’s chair.
Plaque leads to tartar, which leads to gingivitis.
Once tartar begins to accumulate between teeth, your gum tissue swells and eventually bleeds. At its worst, tartar leads to gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease. How to choose your floss.

The important point is to use whichever floss you choose regularly—preferably at least once a day.
Use of interdental cleaners.
These plastic or wood devices help remove food debris between teeth. Some have tiny brushes attached. If you prefer an interdental cleaner rather than floss, look for one that is approved by the ADA. The package should display the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
Floss before or after brushing?
Either is acceptable. Some people prefer to loosen food debris before brushing. Others brush first and finish with a good flossing. As long as you’re flossing regularly, either way should be effective. Just make sure you do both. Flossing or brushing alone can’t completely eliminate plaque. Your best decay defense is to brush and floss, then follow with a good rinse. The rinse flushes any leftover bacteria from your mouth.
