Patients often dread hearing that they need an extraction, but our dentist will only suggest the procedure if there is no other option. Getting a tooth pulled is usually a quick, painless procedure. Contact our office to arrange an appointment with our skilled dentist if you need an extraction.

What is a Tooth Extraction?

An extraction is the process of having a tooth pulled by a dentist or surgically removed by an oral surgeon. First, a dentist will numb the area. Waiting for the local anesthetic often takes longer than the extraction. Next, our dentist rocks the tooth back and forth and then he or she pulls it out. You may feel slight pressure, but you shouldn’t feel any pain.

Why Would I Need a Tooth Pulled?

Our dentists don’t like to pull teeth as they would prefer to save a tooth. Nevertheless, dentists sometimes can’t save teeth badly damaged by trauma or decay. If our dentist performs a tooth extraction, he or she will explain your options for replacing the tooth.

What Does it Cost to Have a Tooth Removed?

Our dentist will need to perform an examination before determining your tooth extraction cost as some extractions are more difficult than others. A dental extraction costs less than a surgical extraction. If you have dental insurance, it may cover a portion of the cost. Call our office to schedule an appointment.

Why Do I Have to See an Oral Surgeon to Get My Tooth Extracted?

When dentists pull teeth, they use forceps to grab the tooth. If your tooth has broken at the gum line, or is impacted, our dentist will refer you to an oral surgeon, who will make a small incision in your gum to reach the tooth.

Will a Dentist Pull My Cracked, Broken or Severely Decayed Tooth if I’m in Pain?

Our dentist will extract a cracked, broken or severely decayed tooth if it cannot be saved with a root canal. A root canal or a tooth extraction will stop the pain, but in severe conditions this may not be an effective treatment.

Won’t My Teeth Just Fall Out if I Have Advanced Stage Gum Disease?

If you have advanced staged gum (periodontal) disease, your teeth will become loose. If you are in pain, our dentist can remove the tooth.

Will a Dentist Pull Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

It’s common for teens and young adults to have problems with their wisdom teeth. Often, the jaw is too small to hold a third set of molars. Our dentist performs wisdom teeth extractions if the teeth have emerged. Impacted wisdom teeth may not emerge. If this is the case, our dentist will recommend that you visit an oral surgeon for the extractions.

Why Do I Need a Dental Extraction Before Getting Braces?

When your teeth are too crowded, they tend to grow in crooked. Tooth removal before getting braces is common to make room for the straightened teeth.

What Are the Most Common Extraction Aftercare Instructions?

In the first 24 hours after a dental extraction, it is essential to follow the aftercare instructions given to you by our dentist. These instructions typically include no smoking, no drinking through a straw and avoiding anything that will disturb the blood clot forming at the extraction site. Our dentist will suggest ways to reduce the swelling and manage the pain.

How Long is the Tooth Extraction Healing Period?

With a simple dental extraction, you can resume your normal activities in 24 to 48 hours, or as directed. In a week or so, the extraction site should have healed. A molar extraction will take slightly longer to heal. If you have a surgical extraction, the healing time is even longer.
